5 Must-Know Spoken Greek Expressions

Today, we’re covering 5 must-know spoken Greek expressions that you’ll hear every day!
If you want to sound more like a native Greek speaker, you’re in the right place!

1️Ούτε που – "Didn’t even / Not at all"

Use ούτε που to make negative sentences way more dramatic!

🔹 Example 1:
🗣 Greek:
• Περίμενα το λεωφορείο μια ώρα, αλλά ο οδηγός ούτε που με κοίταξε και έφυγε!

📝 English:
• I waited for the bus for an hour, but the driver didn’t even look at me and just left! 😤🚌

🔹 Example 2:
🗣 Greek:
• Χθες είχε δυνατή καταιγίδα, αλλά ήμουν τόσο κουρασμένος που ούτε που την άκουσα.

📝 English: • There was a huge storm last night, but I was so tired I didn’t even hear it! 🌩️😴

2️Δηλαδή – "That means / What do you mean?"

Use Δηλαδή when you need clarification!

🔹 Example:
🗣 Greek:
• Έχω κανονίσει κάτι για το Σάββατο.
• Δηλαδή, δεν θα έρθεις μαζί μας;

📝 English:
• I have plans for Saturday.
• Wait, does that mean you’re not coming with us? 🤔

3️Και καλά – "Supposedly / As if"

Use και καλά when someone’s making up an excuse or pretending!

🔹 Example 1:
🗣 Greek:
• Ο Πέτρος είπε ότι και καλά δεν μπορεί να βγει γιατί διαβάζει.

📝 English:
• Petros claims he can’t go out because he’s studying. (Yeah, right! 🙄)

🔹 Example 2:
🗣 Greek:
• Ο Κώστας ανέβασε φωτογραφία από αεροπλάνο, και καλά ότι πάει διακοπές.

📝 English:
• Kostas posted a photo from an airplane, pretending he’s going on vacation. ✈️😂

4️Δήθεν – "Fake / Pretentious"

Use δήθεν to describe someone who’s acting fake or trying too hard!

🔹 Example 1:
🗣 Greek:
• Ο Νίκος κάνει τον δήθεν γκουρμέ, αλλά στο σπίτι τρώει μόνο τοστ.

📝 English:
• Nikos acts like a fancy foodie, but at home, he only eats toast. 🍞😂

🔹 Example 2:
🗣 Greek:
• Δεν μπορώ να αντέξω την Ελένη, είναι τόσο δήθεν! Όλο μιλάει για τις “exclusive” διακοπές της.

📝 English:
• I can’t stand Eleni, she’s so pretentious! She keeps talking about her “exclusive” vacations. 🏝️🙄

5️Με το ζόρι – "By force / Barely"

Use με το ζόρι when something happens by force or barely! 🔹

Example 1:
🗣 Greek:
• Ήμουν τόσο κουρασμένος χθες που με το ζόρι κρατούσα τα μάτια μου ανοιχτά!

📝 English:
• I was so tired yesterday that I could barely keep my eyes open! 😴

🔹 Example 2:
🗣 Greek:
• Η Μαρία είναι τόσο ντροπαλή που με το ζόρι είπε μια κουβέντα στο πάρτι.

📝 English:
• Maria is so shy that she barely said a word at the party. 😳🎉
