COLORS in GREEK : The Most COLORFUL Greek Article

Knowing the colors in Greek is a must!

Imagine you’re in a Greek store and want to buy clothes… You’d like the white or the blue shirt? Or you’re in a Greek restaurant… Would you like some red or white wine?

Today you’ll learn everything about the colors in Greek, their names, some basic rules. Let’s get started!

Basic Colors in Greek

First, let’s see the most important colors in Greek.

red – κόκκινο (kokino)
green – πράσινο (prasino)
orange – πορτοκαλί (portokali)
yellow – κίτρινο (kitrino)
blue – μπλε (ble)
white – άσπρο (aspro)
black – μαύρο (mavro)
grey – γκρι (gri)
brown – καφέ (kafe)
purple – μοβ (mov)
pink – ροζ (roz)

Let’s see how to use the colors in Greek in a little dialogue.
– Τι χρώμα σου αρέσει; (ti hroma su aresi?)
what color do you like?

– Μου αρέσει το κόκκινο. (mu aresi to kokino.)
I like red.

Colors in Greek as adjectives

Colors can be also used as adjectives, when you want to say for example “the blue shirt” or “the red wine”. We will treat them like normal adjectives ending in -ος-η-ο in the 3 genders.

For example
ο κόκκινος σκούφος (o kokinos skufos) = the red winter hat
η κόκκινη φούστα (i kokini fusta) = the red skirt
το κόκκινο κρασί (to kokino krasi) = the red wine

There are many colors used in the Greek language that are NOT Greek words. Words that are NOT Greek never change, they are always the same.

For example
ο μπλε σκούφος (o ble skufos) = the blue winter hat
η μπλε φούστα (i ble fusta) = the blue skirt
το μπλε αυτοκίνητο (to ble aftokinito) = the blue car
