Today I’m going to show you how to answer the phone in Greek. Either when it’s your friend or when you don’t know who is calling you.
How to answer the phone in Greek when you don’t know who is calling you
1. ναι (ne) – yes, “hello”
To an English speaker, it might not sound polite to answer the phone by saying “Yes”, but in Greek, it’s perfectly fine
For example
– Ναι … Hello…
– Γεια σας, θα ήθελα να μιλήσω στον κύριο Νικολάου.
Hello, I would like to speak to Mr. Nikolau.
2. παρακαλώ (parakalo) – please, “hello”
For example
– Παρακαλώ … Hello…
– Καλημέρα, την κυρία Σοφία θα ήθελα.
Good morning, I would like to talk to Mrs Sophia.

How to answer the phone in Greek when it’s your friend
έλα (ela) + their name
If you know who is calling you, and they’re a friend, then this is a very common way to answer.
For example,
– Έλα, Κώστα. Hey, Kosta.
– Έλα, Μαρία, τι κάνεις; Hey, Maria, how are you?
