THE VERB “TO BE” (είμαι) : Greek Grammar for Beginners

Knowing the verb “to be” (είμαι) in Greek is the first verb you need to know. This way you’ll start saying correct sentences and have a good base for the next Greek verbs you’ll learn!

In this lesson, you’ll become an expert on the verb “to be” (είμαι) with clear and easy-to-follow explanations. And useful tips on how to memorize it!

Let’s get started!

The verb “to be” in Greek

Let’s first start with how the verb είμαι is conjugated.

I am – είμαι (ime)
you are – είσαι (ise)
he/she/it is είναι (ine)
we are – είμαστε (imaste)
you are (plural) – είστε (iste)
they are – είναι (ine)

And then let’s see how the personal pronoun “I,you,…” is conjugated.

I – εγώ (egho)
you – εσύ (esi)
he/she/it – αυτός/αυτή/αυτό (aftos/afti/afto)
we – εμείς (emis)
you (plural) – εσείς (esis)
they – αυτοί/αυτές/αυτά (afti/aftes/afta)

Now let’s combine these 2 together! Let’s combine the verb είμαι “to be” with the personal pronoun “I,you,…”

εγώ είμαι – I am
εσύ είσαι – you are
αυτός/αυτή/αυτό είναι – he/she/it is
εμείς είμαστε – we are
εσείς είστε – you (pl) are
αυτοί/αυτές/αυτά είναι – they are

Negative Sentences I am NOT
If you want to form a negative sentence, just add “δεν”(then) before the verb.

For example
δεν είμαι – I am not
δεν είσαι – you are not
δεν είμαστε – we are not

Question Am I ?
If you want to form a question, well… you do almost nothing! Just raise the tone of your voice.
For example
είσαι – you are.
είσαι; – are you?

Examples
1. Hello, Kostas! Are you well?
Γεια σου, Κώστα! Είσαι καλά;

2. Maria is not well.
Η Μαρία δεν είναι καλά.

3. You and Maria are friends.
Εσύ και η Μαρία είστε φίλοι.

4. Where are you?
πού είσαι;

Tips on the Greek verb "είμαι"

1. The words “εγώ, εσύ,…” are not necessary, they are used only for emphasis or contrast
For example
είμαστε – we are
εμείς είμαστε – we are (with emphasis on the “we”) something like WE are (…NOT you)

2.the word “they” has 3 genders masculine – feminine – neuter
In English, we have 3 words for“he,she,it” and 1 word for “they”.
In Greek, we have 3 words for“he,she,it” and 3 words for “they”.

Specifically:
αυτοί means they (masculine)
αυτές means they (feminine)
αυτά means they (neuter)

In other words
αυτός means he and many “he” makes us a they (masculine)
αυτή means she and many “she” makes us a they (feminine)
αυτό means it and many “it” makes us a they (neuter)

2 men are they masculine
2 women are they feminine
1 man and 1 woman is they masculine!

For example
η Μαρία και η Ελένη – αυτές
ο Κώστας και η Μαρία – αυτοί

3. afti ine
“afti ine” could mean she is — αυτή είναι or they are (masculine) –αυτοί είναι

4.esi ise – esis iste
Greek learners usually confuse these 2 in the beginning…
εσύ είσαι – esi ise (you are)
εσείς είστε – esis iste (you are plural)

Be careful!
The spelling is different but the sounds are very similar!
Well done!
Now you’re an expert when it comes to the verb “to be” in Greek!
