8 Things YOU SHOULD KNOW when studying GREEK (and NOONE will ever tell you)

I understand that you may get discouraged as you move on in studying Greek. Keep these things in mind…

1. Learning Greek is a marathon

Learning a language is a marathon. It takes years to learn and master.> You need a minimum of 4-5 years to be able to speak Greek like a native. If that seems a lot, ask a Greek how much time it took him to learn English and then compare! He will probably tell you “I studied English since I was a kid at a language school” and that takes years, not months!

2. Greeks talk fast

If you speak to a native Greek, he will probably talk fast using idioms. Tell him to slow down and talk more slowly and simply!

3. Greeks won’t correct you

If you speak to a native Greek, he will NOT correct you. It’s not his job to do so. Native Greeks appreciate your effort to learn and speak Greek, but they would feel it’s not nice or polite to correct you. They mostly care about communication so they will may switch to English, if they feel they’ll communicate better that way.

4. Your Greek teacher will correct you

Have regular lessons as consistency will give you the best results! Studying a language is like working out at the gym. Practice every day and you’ll get stronger and stronger in Greek.

5. Study Greek with consistency

Instead, practice with a teacher. He will correct you and guide you through the Greek language learning process. To prepare you speak Greek correctly in the real world.

6. It’s all about progress

Things take time and you need to be patient. Maybe you feel you’re progressing too slowly. But if you compare your level in Greek with the one you had 1 year ago, you’ll feel great about how much you improved!

7. Make mistakes

Don’t worry about making mistakes when speaking Greek. That’s normal. Greek is all about communicating and making connections!

8. Enjoy the process

Find ways to enjoy the learning process. Learning Greek is not easy. But it will get easier if you have fun along the way! Start Greek lessons to keep you engaged and enjoy your lessons with a teacher you like his teaching style. Listen to Greek music or watch YouTube videos in Greek or Greek TV series. Even learn things about local Greek customs, traditions and people’s culture. This way you’ll stay motivated and excited to continue learning!
